TWINS Jessica and Jennifer Osborn will be among the first people to take part in the Olympic torch relay when it visits Essex next summer.

The six-year-olds, from Canvey, will play a part in an evening celebration in Chelmsford because they were born on “2012 Day”.

As part of the bid to win the Games, London 2012 organisers promised every child born on December 20, 2004 – the 20th day of the 12th month – would play a part in Olympic celebrations.

The twins’ mum, Alison Webb, of Canvey Road, said: “We haven’t been told exactly what they’ll be doing yet, but they will be part of the celebrations in Chelmsford, on July 6 next year.

“They’re excited to be taking part and it will be special when it comes along.”

The Chelmsford event will feature a live show, including a 20-minute community-led performance to demonstrate the spirit of Essex.

The twins’ celebrations were marred by the fact they had initially believed they would take part in the Olympic opening or closing ceremonies.

Mrs Webb claims Games organisers backed out of their promise to include her youngsters, who go to Northwick Primary School, in the Olympics because she feels the torch relay isn’t a proper part of the Games.

She joined a campaign with other parents to lobby organisers and MPs to include London 2012 babies in the major ceremonies.

More than 700 UK children born on 2012 Day were registered as London 2012 Babies and have since received birthday cards, a certificate and merchandise from Games organisers.

A London 2012 spokeswoman said: “We promised the children will take part in one of the major London 2012 ceremonies and events, and they will.” The torch relay is also expected to visit parts of south Essex, but details of the route have not yet been announced.
