The father of Alfie Evans has told how his new son has given him a reason to live.
Tom Evans and partner Kate James welcomed son Thomas four months after Alfie, aged 23 months, died from a degenerative condition following a long legal battle over his treatment.
Tom, 22, told the Sunday Mirror: “When we see Thomas pull a face he looks like Alfie, we feel that in a way we have them both with us.”
He said the six-month-old has been tested and does not carry the same genes as Alfie.
He added: “I’ve got something to wake up to with him. I have to keep happy for Thomas’s sake. I wouldn’t want to wake up if it wasn’t for the baby.”
The Liverpool couple revealed to the newspaper that a £140,000 fund for Alfie will be spent on helping sick children.
Their case drew global attention last year as they fought to keep Alfie on life support.
During the protracted legal battle, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital said staff had experienced “unprecedented personal abuse” as it found itself at the centre of a “social media storm” as a result of the case.
Protesters attempted to storm the hospital on one occasion and blocked the road outside during demonstrations against the withdrawal of his life-support treatment.
