CASES of coronavirus have soared in a number of areas in the Braintree district.

Public Health England's Covid-19 hotspots maps shows dozens of new cases were recorded around the town of Braintree itself in the seven days up to November 21.

Braintree South saw 20 positive tests carried out in that timeframe, while there were 19 cases in Bocking Churchstreet and Blackwater, and Silver End and Stisted.

The latest data shows the infection rate in Braintree is 119.9 cases per 100,000 people.

A total of 183 positive tests have been carried out in the past seven days.

However, the district's infection rate is still lower than the Essex average of 147.4.

There are a few areas in the Braintree district which have not been highlighted on the hotspots map because they saw fewer than two cases recorded in the seven-day period ending November 21.

They include Hedingham, Gosfield and Greenstead Green, and Finchingfield, Panfield and Bardfield.
