CANVEY Island recovered from three consecutive defeats to secure a 1-0 win over Dereham Town.

Adam Vyse, who joined from Great Wakering Rovers earlier this month, scored the vital goal at Aldiss Park.

And although Dereham played with 10 men from the 36th minute, as Robbie Linford saw red, Gulls boss Mark Bentley felt Canvey dominated proceedings before the sending off.

“I was really pleased because the performance was really good from start to finish,” said Bentley.

“We were a little bit nervous in the last five or 10 minutes, but I thought we thoroughly deserved the win and we could have been a lot more comfortable.

“We changed the shape and went with two up front.

“I didn’t think they could touch us really and I think that we were creating good chances even before the sending off.”

Vyse struck the crossbar inside the opening five minutes, while Gulls captain James White then saw his rebound cleared off the line.

Linford was dismissed nine minutes before the break after picking up two yellow cards.

And Canvey were to profit as Vyse’s powerful header soon after the hour mark was enough to seal victory.
