CANVEY Island boss Mark Bentley is likely to start with two strikers once again when Soham Town Rangers visit the Frost Hire Stadium tomorrow.

Having regularly decided to select just one striker in his starting line-up since replacing Danny Heale in the Gulls’ hotseat, Bentley altered his formation and partnered Adam Vyse with Martin Tuohy at Dereham Town.

Vyse scored his first goal since joining the club from Great Wakering Rovers, with Canvey ending a run of three consecutive defeats in the process.

And Bentley was impressed with how the strikers worked together.

“I will probably stick with two up front against Soham,” said Bentley.

“I think it worked well and I must admit I was a little bit concerned before the game as to whether Tuohy and Vysey would play well up front together.

“But they gave us balance and having two up front gave our full-backs the space and opportunity to get forward as well.

“I was impressed with how it worked and I’d be surprised if I chose not to stay with that shape.

“I was really pleased with the performance at Dereham and hopefully we can go on a run.”

Canvey are 11th in the Isthmian North standings ahead of this weekend’s game and are eight points adrift of the play-off places.

And although Soham head to south Essex in 19th place, they will be buoyed by their victory over Great Wakering Rovers last weekend.

Bentley, who said Jake Jolliffe is a doubt to feature but Josh Hutchinson and Elliott Warren have returned to training, added: “If you look at the table, you would say we should be winning this game.

“But we haven’t performed well against teams below us in the league and we need to make sure our mentality is right if we want to get the three points.”
