BILLERICAY Town, Canvey Island and Great Wakering Rovers fell to defeats, while Basildon United claimed a point on a wet and windy day for non-league football.

Hereford ended Billericay's FA Trophy adventure, while Canvey and Wakering were put to the sword by Witham Town and Coggeshall Town respectively.

Although Canvey and Wakering could not pick up positive results in the Isthmian North, Basildon drew at Grays Athletic.

Hereford 2-1 Billericay Town

Billericay Town were knocked out of the FA Trophy at the first round stage after falling to a narrow defeat at Hereford.

Ross Lafayette put Dean Brennan’s Town on course for victory at Edgar Street, but goals from Tom Owen-Evans and George Lloyd allowed the National League North strugglers to turn the game on its head and progress to the second round.

The visitors got off to the best possible start as Lafayette steered the ball home with just five minutes on the clock.

Fellow attacker Moses Emmanuel also played a crucial role soon after as he cleared a goalbound Hereford effort off the line.

A Callum Kennedy free-kick went over the crossbar midway through the first half, but Hereford were handed a way back into the tie when they were awarded a penalty nine minutes from the break.

Owen-Evans converted the resulting spot-kick to get the home side back on level terms.

Emmanuel headed wide from close range as Billericay looked to gain the upper-hand shortly after the interval, while Alan Julian had to be at his best to frustrate Hereford.

With just 10 minutes remaining, Alfie Potter slid over from close range.

And that miss proved crucial as the hosts grabbed the winner just 60 seconds later, with Lloyd guiding the ball into the back of the net.

The National League South high-flyers pushed for a late equaliser, but they were unable to break their opponents down for a second time.

Canvey Island 0-1 Witham Town

Canvey Island were left frustrated as they lost to Isthmian North strugglers Witham Town at a wet and windy Frost Hire Stadium.

Johnny Ashman grabbed what proved to be the only goal of the game, which resulted in the Gulls failing to build on their thumping win over Felixstowe & Walton United last time out and falling to third consecutive home defeat.

The visitors were awarded a 16th minute penalty in bizarre circumstances.

A ball over the top was flicked on by a Canvey defender into the path of Sam Ashford. The assistant referee thought the ball through had come off a Witham head and raised his flag for offside, with Sam Collins picking the ball up in order to take a free-kick.

However, the referee rightly overruled his assistant referee and was left with no choice but to point to the spot.

But Witham failed to take advantage as Gulls goalkeeper Harry Palmer made a fine diving save to keep out Ashford’s effort.

Elliott Warren denied the struggling away side after Sam Owusu had slotted beyond Palmer and Canvey failed to register a single shot on target in the first half.

Witham nearly broke the deadlock four minutes after the restart as Kevin Coyle’s dangerous cross evaded everyone and whistled past the post.

But the visitors eventually took the lead soon after the hour mark as Ashman’s low free-kick from 30 yards out beat Palmer.

Substitute Adam Vyse’s strike was kept out by custodian Luca Collins, who kept his clean sheet intact.

Grays Athletic 2-2 Basildon United

Basildon United were denied a first win in 12 matches as Grays Athletic hit a late leveller at Parkside.

The Bees took the lead twice, with Luke Stanley and Callum Taylor both on target.

But a Ryan Reed own goal, along with a late equaliser from Aron Gordon, allowed Jamie Stuart’s hosts to steal a share of the spoils.

It looked as though the first half was going to end goalless, but Stanley broke the deadlock three minutes before the break to send Lee Connor’s side in ahead at the interval.

However, Reed put through his own goal soon after the hour mark to allow Grays to draw level.

The Bees were handed the opportunity to move back in front with just nine minutes remaining as the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

Taylor dispatched the spot-kick and Basildon looked to see out the closing stages.

But Gordon’s low drive, through a crowded penalty area, allowed the hosts to seal a point.

Coggeshall Town 3-0 Great Wakering Rovers

Great Wakering Rovers were condemned to a heavy defeat by Isthmian North high-flyers Coggeshall Town.

Sam Bantick, Conor Hubble and Ross Wall got their names on the scoresheet as Coggeshall continued their search for consecutive promotions.

Wakering boss Garry Kimble handed former Basildon United striker Brian Moses a debut just days after making the move to Burroughs Park, but the new frontman was unable to lead the reigning Essex Senior League champions to a positive result.

Coggeshall goalkeeper Danny Sambridge pulled off a great save to deny Billy Johnson, while Wakering also failed to take advantage when they should have scored from a corner.

The visitors were punished as Bantick headed home the opener after 29 minutes.

Wakering goalkeeper Coey Turipa was equal to a Bantick free-kick soon after as Coggeshall ended the half on top.

Sambridge was in fine form as the Coggeshall custodian pulled off a number of fine saves to keep his clean sheet intact.

Hubble doubled Coggeshall’s advantage soon after the hour mark as he found the bottom corner of the net.

Wall wrapped up all three points for the hosts by heading home a Tevan Allen cross 10 minutes from time.
