STEPHEN Humphrys scored twice on his Southend United debut to help the Shrimpers record an impressive 4-0 win at Bradford City.

The Blues new boy sealed his switch from Fulham on the morning of the match and made an impressive impression as he scored two well-taken strikes to cap a fine first performance.

Humphrys was joined on the score-sheet by Simon Cox and Sam Mantom as Chris Powell’s side recorded a fine win on the road.

Southend took just two minutes to break the deadlock, with Cox on target for the second game in succession.

The Shrimpers striker latched onto a loose ball after Mantom appeared to have been brought down and fired a 20 yard shot into the bottom left hand corner of the net with the outside of his right foot.

Moments later, Mantom sent a long range effort straight at Bradford goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell before the Shrimpers skipper’s left wing cross was impressively cleared by a sliding Nathaniel Knight-Percival just as Cox looked set to score.

But Blues were not to be denied for long and, in the 26th minute, they doubled their lead with an excellent effort from Mantom.

The midfielder collected a pass from Shrimpers new boy Sam Hart and curled an impressive 25 yard shot into the right hand side of the net.

With Blues remaining on top, another new signing –Humphrys – then saw a low 20 yard shot impressively saved down to his right hand by O’Donnell who then did well to parry away a swerving long range shot from Timothee Dieng.

After the break, the Bantams looked to get back into the game and only a stunning save from Nathan Bishop stopped George Miller heading home from close range.

The fine stop proved to be a huge moment in the game as, in the 54th minute, the Shrimpers extended their advantage with Humphrys netting on his debut.

The striker showed good composure after getting in down Bradford’s right hand side and cooly rounded the advancing O’Donnell before tapping the ball into the back of the net.

The Bantams replied with Hope Akpan having an effort ruled out for offside before Blues made it 4-0 in the 73rd minute, with Humphrys bagging his second goal of the game.

The striker again strode forward down the right flank before cutting inside and sending a stunning left footed shot, from 25 yards, into the left hand side of the net.

Humphrys soon made way for Theo Robinson before Blues boss Chris Powell made two more changes in quick succession with Dru Yearwood and Charlie Kelman entering the action.

Kelman threatened a fifth late on when his deflected left footed shot flew into the side netting but by then Blues had already done enough to secure a return to winning ways.
