Southend United boss Kevin Bond thrilled with win against Burton Albion but stresses 'nothing has been achieved yet'

The victory ended Blues’ 15 match winless streak and also saw them move out of the relegation zone with just two games to go.

But Bond was keen to stress the Shrimpers have still not secured their League One status.

“The lads are so pleased and I could let them be pleased last night but we recognise we haven’t done anything yet,” said Bond.

“We’ve won one game and it’s a nice feeling but we will need the same next week now and then the week after that too.

“It’s a relief to have got the three points.”

The victory moved Southend up to 19th in the standings, a point above the relegation zone.

But Bond admitted it was tough viewing from the touchline as he secured his first victory as Shrimpers boss.

“We gave ourselves a two goal cushion twice but we never make it easy for ourselves and gave a couple of goals away,” said Bond.

“We performed really well against a really good team who play some terrific football and we showed great character too.

“It was a really tough game for us but it’s a great victory which was also well needed but well deserved too.

“The lads’ application was superb and it keeps everything alive for us still with two games left to play.”

The Shrimpers, who had previously not won since January, head to Rochdale this weekend.

But Bond feels the team will make the trip with added confidence after surviving a nervy final few minutes.

“We were hanging on,” said the 61-year-old.

“I heard the fourth official say to the referee that’s five minutes up but he kept on playing.

“I don’t know where five minutes came from let alone what he played after that and he kept on letting them get the ball in the box.

“He kept playing and playing and playing but we saw it out and everyone feels pleased.

“It’s our first win for a number of games but I have to say the fans were great too. They got behind us and it was real home support which was really appreciated and needed.”
