CANVEY Island rounded off the campaign by recording a 3-1 win at Brentwood Town.

Although Brentwood’s Charlee Hughes cancelled out Ade Cole’s opener on the stroke of half-time, goals from Frankie Merrifield and Ryan Melaugh ensured the Gulls would claim a third consecutive victory for the first time this season.

Canvey were able to finish ninth in the Isthmian North standings and boss Mark Bentley was pleased to go into the summer in style.

Bentley said: “It’s definitely a nice way to cap off the season.

“We targeted as many wins as we could a few weeks ago.

“We’ve come away with three wins and we’ve got ourselves into the top 10 as well, which means we can finish the season in a positive manner.

“We thoroughly deserved the result. We were always in control of the game and it had an end of season feel but my boys did it properly.

“We could have scored more goals and it was a positive performance.”

Harry Palmer had to be alert to an inswinging corner from Mitch Hunter, with the Canvey goalkeeper punching the delivery onto the crossbar.

And the Gulls broke the deadlock five minutes later as Cole fired Merrifield’s flick-on home with the help of a deflection.

Brentwood got back on level terms four minutes after the resumption as former Bowers & Pitsea frontman Hughes converted with the visitors failing to clear a long throw-in.

Canvey retook the lead as Merrifield scored his eighth goal in the last four outings after Rob Budd had parried away Cole’s effort.

And substitute Melaugh completed the scoring with 10 minutes remaining.
