STEVE Butterworth is pleased with the calibre of Great Wakering Rovers’ pre-season opponents.

The Isthmian North side are due to return to training at the start of next month and have arranged seven friendlies.

And Butterworth is looking forward to seeing his outfit tested in the encounters.

“We are playing sides from all different levels and it will be good to see how we get on in pre-season,” said Butterworth, who was confirmed as the club’s permanent player-manager in April.

“We have a good mix of friendlies that will test us.

“I am good friends with Craig Edwards and so he has agreed to bring his Cheshunt side to us for the first friendly.

“We’re also playing Isthmian Premier League sides in East Thurrock United and Hornchurch, where I have a good relationship with some of the coaching staff.”

Former Billericay Town boss Edwards will bring his Cheshunt side to Burroughs Park on July 13.

Cheshunt also went head-to-head with Wakering in three friendlies over the course of last term.

Butterworth’s charges will then be on the road when they visit Essex Senior League side Sawbridgeworth Town three days later.

Wakering are set to entertain Eastern Senior League Division One South side White Ensign, who will also hold their home clashes at Burroughs Park in the upcoming campaign, on July 23.

Stanway Rovers will host Wakering on July 23 before the Isthmian North side do battle with John Coventry’s East Thurrock in a home fixture four days later.

July 30 will see Wakering make the journey to Walthamstow, who finished the Essex Senior League campaign in fine form.

Wakering will complete their pre-season programme against Isthmian Premier League side Hornchurch on August 3.

Meanwhile, Wakering are looking for a first team physio.

Experienced physios and trainees who need to gain experience are welcome to apply.

The role can be offered on a full-time or part-time basis.
