MATT Rhead is ‘100 per cent certain’ that he will enjoy success with Billericay Town.

The striker completed his move to the Steel Team Stadium from Lincoln City last week.

And, having sealed the switch for an undisclosed fee, Rhead cannot wait for the new National League South season to get underway.

“You can see from the outside that it’s a club on the up and people all over the country are talking about Billericay,” said the 35-year-old, who made his Town debut in the 2-1 pre-season friendly defeat to Boreham Wood.

“The owner (Glenn Tamplin) and manager (Harry Wheeler) have sold the club to me and I’m looking forward to getting started.

“It was only on Tuesday or Wednesday that it came out that Lincoln were looking to offload me.

“Billericay were the club that showed the most interest in me and backed up what they were saying.

“It’s a good stadium and the lads have been good with me so far.

“I’m 100 per cent certain that we can enjoy success and hopefully it will be an enjoyable season.”

Rhead enjoyed great success with Lincoln, where he won two league titles and the Checkatrade Trophy.

The frontman also played a key role as the Imps, led by former FitzWimarc School teacher and Concord Rangers boss Danny Cowley, became the first non-league side in more than 100 years to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

But Rhead had to endure lengthy spells of last term, which saw Lincoln crowned League Two champions, out of the starting line-up.

And Rhead is keen to enjoy more time on the pitch following his move to Billericay.

“It was frustrating for me last season because I spent a lot of time on the bench,” added Rhead.

“When you’ve done well for the team and then find yourself out of the team for long periods, it’s difficult.

“It was probably one of the toughest periods of my career because I was just watching football matches instead of being involved.

“When I came into full-time football I wanted to play matches. You don’t want to sit and watch no matter what standard you’re at.

“It’s important that I get back playing and hopefully I will get that opportunity here.”

While earning promotion to the top tier of non-league football is Rhead’s primary aim heading into the upcoming campaign, Rhead is keen to go on and break into the Football League for a third time in his career having already won promotion from the National League with Mansfield Town and Lincoln.

Rhead admitted: “You always strive to do better than you have in the past and it will be difficult.

“But, with the squad we’ve got and the players already here having bags of experience, I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“All I care about is winning. As long as the team is winning, it doesn’t matter if I score goals.

“We want to be challenging at the top of the league.”
