DANNY Scopes believes his Concord Rangers side need to learn how to cope with going into matches as the favourites to emerge victorious.

Having got the National League South campaign off to a 100 per cent winning start, the Beach Boys made the trip to winless Tonbridge Angels.

But a late Jack Parter goal saw Concord suffer their first setback in the form of a 1-0 defeat and Scopes has called on his side to adapt their mentality.

The Beach Boys’ boss said: “We went to Tonbridge as favourites and we are not used to that pressure.

“As Concord Rangers, we know that we never really go anywhere as the favourites, so it was an odd position to be in.

“We were the favourites because Tonbridge had yet to win a game, while we had won all three of ours.

“Although we’re not used to being the favourites, it’s something that we have got to deal with.

“It’s another skill that we have got to learn.”

However, Scopes believes Concord’s first loss could be seen as a positive.

Scopes added: “I 100 per cent believe that you learn more from your team when you lose.

“You learn about what you need to do better.

“We had glimpses in games where we have shown what we are capable of and it’s important that we do that consistently.

“There have been a lot of positives so far this season, but we didn’t do the basics correctly.

“We were nowhere near our best, but it was still 0-0 until the 89th minute.

“In a way, that’s a positive because the best teams manage to hold on and grind out a result when they are not at their best.

“We got so close to coming away with a point, so there are plenty of positives and negatives.”

And Scopes conceded that Concord did not deserve to pick up a positive result at Tonbridge.

“It wasn’t one of our best performances and it wasn’t at the levels we have set,” admitted Scopes.

“I have to give Tonbridge credit because they were full value for the win.

“There are a few bits to work on and we lacked a bit of energy, but that may be down to the fact that we have played so many games in a short space of time.

“We would have taken nine points from the first 12 available if we had been offered it at the start of the season, so I’m pleased.

“You can’t afford to get too high or too low as the games come thick and fast.”
