MARK Bentley wants Freddy Eastwood to build on scoring his first goal in senior football when Canvey Island do battle with Histon tomorrow.

Eastwood, who is on loan from Southend United, netted in the Gulls’ 5-0 romp against Witham Town in the Isthmian League Cup last time out.

And Bentley, who played alongside the talented teenager’s father at Roots Hall during his playing days, has called on Eastwood to maintain his high confidence levels.

“It was really good that Freddy got his first goal in senior football,” said Canvey boss Bentley.

“He was a threat the whole time he was on the pitch and full of confidence.

“Freddy’s play was fantastic and he ended the game with a goal and two assists, which is really promising.

“Now it’s a case of him needing to build on that and taking it into every game he is involved in.”

Canvey are currently 15th in the Isthmian North standings but have played at least two games less than those around them.

Victory when Histon visit Park Lane tomorrow would see the Gulls leapfrog their 10th-placed visitors and Bentley is eager to secure all three points.

“We looked refreshed against Witham and we need to reach those standards again against Histon,” added Bentley.

“When we look at the league table, we are not where we want to be.

“I know we have games in hand but we want to get up the table and challenging at the top end.

“When three points are on offer, we need to take them.

“Histon will be wanting the same, but we can go above them if we win and we will use that as an incentive.”
