STEVE Sheehan has been tipped to become the next Danny Cowley after stepping into his first coaching role.

The defender - who counts East Thurrock United, Canvey Island and Billericay Town among his former clubs - has been appointed as Braintree Town’s new player-assistant manager.

And Braintree boss George Borg believes Sheehan could follow in the footsteps of Cowley, who was a teacher at the Rayleigh-based FitzWimarc School at the same time as enjoying success as Concord Rangers’ boss and is now in charge of Championship outfit Huddersfield Town.

“I think the time is right for Steve to get involved with the managerial side of things and I’m pleased that he has agreed to become my assistant manager,” said Borg.

“He is a good buffer for the lads because we have a lot of youngsters in the squad.

“I feel Steve has a hell of a good future ahead of him in management and this is a good opportunity for him.

“He has only been here for a month but he is getting to know the club and supporters.

“I will help him along the way and it will be good to see how he takes to the role.

“I think Steve will grow into his new role and enjoy it.

“He has got a bright future ahead of him and, who knows, he could go on and become the new Danny Cowley.

“It would be fantastic if he could enjoy success as assistant manager and it will be a learning curve.”

Sheehan joined National League South side Braintree from East Thurrock last month.
