DANNY Scopes has been involved in some key battles for Concord Rangers, but he believes tomorrow’s FA Trophy quarter-final clash with Royston Town is among the biggest clashes in the club’s history.

Scopes, in his first season back in charge, has led the Beach Boys on a record-breaking run in the competition and are potentially just 270 minutes away from a trip to Wembley Stadium.

Standing between Concord and a place in the final four are Royston, but boss Scopes is eager to prolong the National League South club’s stay in the FA Trophy by making home advantage count at the Aspect Arena this weekend.

“This game has to be up there with the biggest in the history of Concord Rangers,” said Scopes, who also represented the Beach Boys during his playing career and enjoyed a fruitful spell as joint-manager with Danny Cowley.

“Concord have been involved in some big games, including before I came to the club and during my time here.

“We played in some big games towards the end of the Essex Senior League season as we won promotion and started this incredible journey up the pyramid.

“There have also been play-off games and cup ties, but this is a massive game.

“This is one of the biggest competitions we compete in and it is a great opportunity to get into the semi-finals.

“Maintaining our National League South status is the priority, but this run in the FA Trophy has been a bonus.

“This is for the fans and it’s also a chance for the players to boost their profile.

“Hopefully we will get a lot of supporters into the ground, because welcoming new fans is one of our long-term ambitions.”

Concord have overcome Slough Town, Maidstone United, Bath City and Leamington en route to the quarter-finals.

And Scopes admits guiding the Beach Boys into the semi-finals would be a memorable moment.

“It’s a fantastic position for a club like us to be in and it’s an exciting time for me, as manager,” added Scopes.

“I think it would be unbelievable to prepare Concord for a two-legged semi-final in the FA Trophy.

“It would be an amazing achievement and just saying those words would stick with me forever.

“We have to focus on getting the job done and remember the process.

“It’s important the players give their all and the result will come.

“We can’t afford to look too far ahead because that’s when teams come unstuck.”

Royston are third in the Southern Premier Central standings and have eliminated the likes of Wealdstone and Ebbsfleet United to set up a trip to the Aspect Arena.

“Royston are professional in what they do and have a good squad,” admitted Scopes.

“You only have to look at the teams they have beaten on their way to this stage to know how dangerous they can be, but we want to make more history.”
