SOUTHEND United fans are enjoying being back in Roots Hall – albeit as cardboard cut outs.

Supporters are still unable to attend matches due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But they are now able to attend in an unusual way and season card holder Robert Askew is among them enjoying being back in the ground in some way.

“As a season ticket holder I so want to get back to games in person but this is the next best thing and it also provides further support to the club,” said Askew.

“I do what I can to help out, and this seemed another good way to support the club.

“It was great to be part of the crowd, albeit in cardboard form, and look forward to the players celebrating in front of me soon.”

The fans were inside the ground for the first time on Tuesday night for Blues’ 2-1 defeat against Oldham Athletic.

And supporter Graeme Shaw was happy to see himself back in the East Stand.

“It was a present for my 30th birthday so it made me laugh and it’s a good idea,” said Shaw.

“Hopefully it won’t be long until we can be back in the ground properly though.”

The cut-outs will next be in use against Port Vale on Saturday.

And Blues’ matchday experience officer Jordan Groom has been pleased with the response of the supporters.

“The response has been fantastic with over 30 signing up in quick time to be present for Tuesday’s game, supporting the club in difficult times,” said Groom.
