RUGBY: Matt Wagstaff is still seeking improvements for Southend Saxons, despite their fine form.

Saxons go into tomorrow’s home clash with Dagenham sitting top of the Regional Two Anglia table having won their last 14 matches.

But co-captain Wagstaff feels Southend have been below their best in recent weeks.

“Results have gone our way but the performances since Christmas haven’t been our best,” said Wagstaff.

“Every side we play will be gunning for us. We are top and there isn’t a better feeling than beating the top team.

“We have to stick to our strengths and just play without fear.”

Saxons sit six points clear at the top and Wagstaff cannot wait to be back in action after not playing last weekend.

“I’m really excited about getting back out there,” he said.

“We’re in a great position currently, but that means nothing until the end of the season.

“A lot of hard work is required and we have some tough fixtures. We need to stay focused each week but we believe we can finish strong and win the league.”

In Regional One South East tomorrow, second-bottom Rochford Hundred head to fifth-placed Shelford, while basement boys Westcliff face the daunting trip to runaway leaders Colchester.

In Counties Two Essex (South), table-toping Basildon host second placed Old Brentwoods, third placed Billericay are at home to sixth placed Millwall and fifth placed Canvey Island entertain Kings Cross Steelers who are fourth.
