BOWERS & Pitsea goalkeeper David Hughes is keen to finish what he has started this weekend.

Hughes saved two penalties in Tuesday night’s play-off semi-final success at Felixstowe & Walton.

And the shot-stopper is now seeking more success against Brentwood Town in tomorrow’s Isthmian North final at the Len Salmon Stadium.

“I cant wait for the final,” said Hughes.

“Being an Essex derby it should attract a big crowd and be a chance for both teams to show why they deserve to be there.

“We’ve worked extremely hard to get to this point and the success of the season revolves around the result on Saturday so we’ll be ready.”

Bowers finished the regulation season sitting fourth in the table, one point and one place higher than Brentwood.

Both sides are therefore gunning for promotion via the play-offs.

And Hughes felt the manner of Bowers’ semi-final success was indicative of their season.

“It almost mirrored our season to date because we don’t things the easy way but we know how to dig in, grind it out and get things done,” said Hughes.

“I think we have an abundance of character in our squad.

“That’s shown throughout the season and again when Felixstowe equalised late on.

“Felixstowe should have gone into extra time with the momentum however that wasn’t the case.

“We believed we had enough to go through to the final whether that was in 90 minutes, extra time or penalties.

“At no point did we panic.

“We are an extremely resilient group, we absorb any pressure, then pick our moment and go again.”

However, it was penalties which decided Tuesday night’s semi-final and saw Hughes take centre stage.

The custodian kept out two of Felixstowe’s four penalties and relished his role in the victory.

“I love penalties as they are almost a free hit for a goalkeeper,” said Hughes.

“I do research the players that are likely to take the penalties and try to base where they go from previous penalties, their style of play and persona.

“But I did receive some footage from Lau (Collins) our assistant manager) which also helped.”

Bowers lost 2-0 to Brentwood at the Len Salmon Stadium in the league back in October before winning 3-1 away from home against Town last month.
