Blue Square South: FLEET and their Welsh visitors played out an entertaining, but goalless Blue Square South draw on Saturday with County likely to have left Ship Lane the happier side.

In a match with very few clear cut chances, traveling ’keeper Glyn Thompson produced a man of the match performance with a number of outstanding saves from Fola Orilonishe and Blue Square South Player of the Month for November, Leon McKenzie.

McKenzie had the first chance of the game in the opening minute, turning on Che Stadhart’s through ball, but he could not keep his shot down.

In the 18th minute, County’s Craig Hughes cut in from the right flank but his shot also flew over the bar.

On the half hour mark Andy Sambrook’s free kick was headed by a Newport defender straight to McKenzie whose stunning volley was equally as impressively saved by Thompson.

Seven minutes later, Orilonishe beat Paul Bignot on the left and as he curled his right footed shot towards the bottom right hand corner, Thompson was once again at hand to tip his shot round the post.

In the 58th minute, Mark Wright’s deep cross was headed straight at Thompson by McKenzie.

Newport began to put pressure on Thurrock and on 74 minutes, Wayne Turk’s low cross into the box was headed narrowly wide by Bignot.

Danny Rose tried a late ambitious 40-yard effort which flew over and wide, before Thurrock raced down the other end with McKenzie and Wright linking up to provide Stadhart an opportunity that the visitors somehow cleared off the line.

Charlie Howard was dismissed for Thurrock in injury time having picked up his second booking of the game for an off the ball incident which also saw Rose become the fifth County player booked in an otherwise clean game.
