LEE Sawyer is back at Southend United.

The energetic midfielder starred for the Shrimpers during a three month loan stint last season.

And he has now agreed to return to Roots Hall for another temporary spell from Chelsea, this time until January.

The 19-year-old scored three times in 13 appearances last season and manager Steve Tilson is delighted to again be working with Sawyer.

“I’m over the moon with bringing Lee back to the Club," said Tilson.

“He’s an exciting young player who we know all about and I am sure supporters will be as delighted as we are with the news.

“He is about a week behind the rest of the squad in terms of fitness but it’s a good signing for us and I’m sure he will bed in right away because he obviously knows most of the squad already.”

Tilson had been keen to work with Sawyer for longer last season but transfer rules meant the midfielder was unable to stay for a sustained period and he was subsequently loaned to both Coventry City and Wycombe Wanderers.

He is now back with the Shrimpers though and Tilson is sure the energetic youngster will be a hit again in League One.

“When Chelsea contacted us we jumped at the chance,” said the 43-year-old.

“He is a real attacking threat and isn't afraid to put a tackle in also so he will definitely add something.”

Sawyer played the second half of last night's 4-0 win at Canvey Island, with the formalities of the transfer due to be completed towards the end of the week.

The former England youth international helped the Shrimpers record a third successive victory during pre-season as Tilson enjoyed a successful return to the Gulls.
