IT has been a mixed week for Basildon United. They were removed from the Essex Senior Cup and London APSA reinstated after it was discovered that the new towners had mistakenly fielded a suspended player in their previous round win.

APSA will now host Hullbridge Sports in the third round at their Terence McMillan Stadium home with a provisional date of November 5.

But Basildon bounced back from this news to reach the quarter-finals of the league’s Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy thanks to a 3-2 win at holders Burnham Ramblers.

John Bradley grabbed a brace for the hosts after 44 and 89 minutes, but Wes Bocking went one better for Basildon with a hat-trick in 50, 69 and 79 minutes.

Basildon finish their League Cup qualifying matches with a Group C visit to Clapton tomorrow night.

Another side with Essex Senior Cup ambitions are Bowers and Pitsea, who got the dream draw in round three when they came out of the hat first to host League One Southend United.

The tie will go ahead at the Len Salmon Stadium in Crown Avenue a week earlier than planned, on Wednesday October 28, to accommodate Blues playing an FA Youth Cup game.

But Bowers dropped out of the Brasted Trophy when they lost 4-3 at home to Sawbridgeworth after extra-time.

Craig Gillam (29 and 45) and Paul Carr (48) got Bowers’ goals, but Chris Ojebanjo grabbed a hat-trick after 40, 45 and 67 minutes — the last a penalty — and Jamie Gray scored a 103rd minute winner.

Hullbridge Sports went out 2-1 at Takeley with Chris Groves grabbing an 80th minute penalty. Joe Galsworthy scored a 10th minute opener for Takeley and Chris Brown levelled 20 minutes from time.

Dan Stanley’s 87th minute goal saw Southend Manor home 2-1 against Enfield 1893 at Southchurch Park.

Manor came back from a 1-0 deficit, Neil Hughes scoring for Enfield on 45 minutes, before an own goal on 63 minutes levelled things up.

Other second round results: Bethnal Green United 4, Barking 1; Clapton 1, Tiptree United 2; Stansted 1, Barkingside 3; Witham 2, Mauritius Sports 1. There were no league games.
