MATT Paterson fired himself back in to the plans of Southend United manager Paul Sturrock with two goals in a 3-1 win at Barnet last night.

The striker seemed to be heading out of Roots Hall after falling out of favour.

But he bagged a brace against the Bees as Blues went through to the third round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Underhill.

“I had a chat with Matt the day before the game and told him there was still an opportunity here for him if he wanted it,” said Sturrock.

“His performances had been indifferent to his talent and I was thinking that may it may be best to send him out on loan.

“I’ve changed my mind now though, but I actually did that before the game. He took his goals well but he appreciates there is plenty of work to be done. If he keeps on working hard though then he will get further chances and he certainly took his goals well against Barnet. I was also pleased with his fitness because he hasn’t played for quite a few weeks.”

But while Sturrock was full of praise for Paterson he was infuriated by Bilel Mohsni’s second half dismissal. The centre-back was sent off after pushing out at Bees striker Phil Walsh.

And Sturrock had no complaints over the decision.

“This is something which has been coming and Bilel can’t keep on getting involved in these kind of incidents,” said Sturrock.

“We can’t afford this kind of petulance and he will be having a meeting with me.

“Graham Coughlan came on and was outstanding in difficult circumstances.”
