WICKFORD Tennis Club’s Autumn finals day mostly survived inclement weather on Sunday with five of the six scheduled matches completed.

Mikki Allen won the ladies’ singles plate, defeating Sandy Ellis 6-4 6-1.

In the men’s plate, Tony Forster came from a set down to beat Stewart Clark 2-6 6-2 6-1.

The Colin Young mixed doubles final saw Nicola Thain and Bob Chapman defeat Glynis Exley and Andre Lubbe 6-3 6-4.

And The Ellis Trophy mixed veteran’s title was claimed by Sandy Ellis and Dave Goodman.

They beat Kay Debenham and Stewart Clark 6-4 6-3.

>Rayleigh will be going all out to win their first Southend & District men’s title for seven years on Sunday.

The men’s team from the Watchfield Road club want to land the trophy they last won in 2003, but first they must overcome the challenge of Thorpe Bay in the Premier League final clash.

Rayleigh’s seven-year wait for the title is a drop in the ocean compared to Thurrock’s 48-year drought.

The club has only been back in the S&D for two years but the mixed doubles team will be looking to win their first title league championship since 1962.

Westcliff Hardcourts have already won the Ladies and Mixed Veterans Leagues.

Junior action will see David Lloyd Southend take on Hockley in the boys’ U16 and the boys U14 league, while Westcliff Lawn will defend their title against Southend Lawn in the U12 division.

The Girls’ Grands Prix Leagues also come to a close with Emily Watts (Rayleigh) against Holly Knight (Thorpe Bay) in the U16. The U14 sees the very much anticipated clash of Vicki Wilson (David Lloyd Southend) and Alissa Bass (Westcliff Hard) going head to head for the title. Holly Wasmuth (David Lloyd Basildon) will play off against Julia Edwards (Hockley) for the championship. Both girls defeated opponents who finished higher than them in the league phase of the competition.

The Mini Green Championship (Boys/Girls U10) sees tournament favourite Ethan Evison (Westcliff Lawn) up against Bradley Gordon (David Lloyd Southend). Both boys were undefeated in the league and elimination series, so something will have to give on Sunday. >Thorpe Bay Ladies Vets Thirds had a convincing win over Harlow Ladies in an Essex League Division Three C match.

Elaine Murray and Sharon Sedgwick beat both Harlow pairings 6-0 6-2 and 6-0 6-1.

Thorpe Bay’s second pairing of Margaret Tubbs and Liz Hoare also won 6-3 6-1 and 6-0 6-4.

All 10 points went to Thorpe Bay.
