SOUTHEND United have parted company with assistant manager Tommy Widdrington.

The 39-year-old former Salisbury Town boss was not in the dugout for last night's 2-0 win over Cheltenham Town.

A club spokesman told the Echo last night that Widdrington had not left Blues but a statement from the League Two side has now confirmed otherwise.

"Going forwards manager Paul Sturrock feels a fresh impetus is needed," said the statement.

"Paul will be making new appointments to his support staff in the near future once he has evaluated candidates.

"The board and management wishes Tommy all the best for the future."
