LEAGUE leaders Rochford Hundred returned to action in style with an emphatic 62-0 win against Harlow.

Hundred had not been in action for two weeks because of the weather and had to switch venues for the game to go ahead.

But they produced a classy exhibition of fast flowing rugby.

Rochford opened the scoring with two breakaway tries from wingers Sean Conneely and Sam Barnes one of which was converted by Tom Ashton who also kicked a penalty to put them ahead 15 -0.

Hundred raced further ahead with tries from Dan Allen and Matt Stewart, with Ashton adding a conversion to make it 27-0.

Conneely finished off the half with another try which Ashton converted but the second period was much closer.

Rochford did however score during this period when Tom Corbet went over for the first of his three tries which Ashton duly converted .

Hundred then also rallied late on, thanks to Corbet who broke free from a loose maul to dive under the post.

Corbet then also finished off a blistering fast move and Ashton again converted.

Rochford then completed the rout with a try from number eight George Chipper with Ashton again adding the extras. Hundred now travel to local rivals Canvey Island this weekend. But Canvey go in to the game on the back of a 25-14 defeat at second placed Braintree.

Braintree opened the scoring with a penalty after some sound defence from the Islanders and they then went over for a try.

Despite pressing the Canvey lines and the Islanders losing a player with a yellow card, Braintree could only manage to put another penalty over the posts to make the score 11-0 at half time.

The second period was much the same until late in to the half when Canvey started to make forays into the Braintree half.

From a scrum, number eight Dave Dennis picked up and drove over for a try converted by Lee Thorne.

Canvey were now back in the game and Dennis then touched down for a second time which Thorne converted.

However, the Islanders’ hopes of a come-back were dashed when Braintree scored two late tries late on — much to the frustration of club spokesman Joe Iespesh.

“The boys know the game was theirs to win and at this level you must play the game for the whole 80 minutes and not relax,” he said.
